ECB-Euro area investment fund statistics: first quarter of 2017
May 24, 2017--In the first quarter of 2017 the outstanding amount of shares/units issued by investment funds other
than money market funds was €10,464 billion, which is €419 billion higher than in the fourth quarter of
2016.
Investment funds other than money market funds increased their holdings of both equity and debt securities issued by the rest of the world. At the same time the holdings of debt securities issued by
euro area residents decreased and equity increased.

May 24, 2017--The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published updated questions and answers documents (Q&A) on the application of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) and the Undertakings for the Collective Investment in Transferable Securities Directive (UCITS).
The AIFMD Q&As include three new questions and answers on:
Reporting to National Competent Authorities (NCAs) on the breakdown between retail and professional investors; Notification of AIFMs on the AIFs to be managed, if domiciled in another Member State;

Russian Economy Moves to Recovery from Recession, says the World Bank
May 23, 2017--The Russian Federation is showing encouraging signs of overcoming the recession it entered in 2014.
The economy is projected to grow 1.3% in 2017, and then 1.4% in both 2018 and 2019, according to the World Bank's latest Russia Economic Report (no. 37 in the series) launched today in Moscow.

European Semester 2017 Spring Package: Commission issues country-specific recommendations
May 22, 2017--States should use the window of opportunity offered by the economic recovery to pursue structural reforms, boost investment and strengthen their public finances.
The European Commission today presents its 2017 country-specific recommendations (CSRs), setting out its economic policy guidance for individual Member States for the next 12 to 18 months. The economy in the EU and the euro area is proving resilient, but challenges, such as slow productivity growth, the legacies of the crisis-including persisting inequalities-and uncertainty arising mostly from external factors continue.

Irish central bank examines regulation of ETFs

Ireland's central bank has become the latest regulator to call for greater scrutiny of how the $4tn exchange traded fund industry works and whether existing guidelines are adequate in light of the industry's astronomical growth.

Russian Federation: Staff Concluding Statement of the 2017 Article IV Mission
May 19, 2017--The economy is exiting a two-year recession that, thanks to the authorities' effective policy response and the existence of robust buffers, proved shallower than past downturns.
Growth is expected to reach 1.4 percent this year, supported by easier financial conditions and higher oil prices. Inflation continues to decline, driven by the ruble appreciation and still weak consumer demand, and is forecasted to reach the Central Bank's 4 percent target this year and to remain close to it thereafter.

New record with a daily turnover of €1.4 million
Total on-exchange value traded YTD has increased to €56.90 million, vs €15.85 million YTD 2016
New RFQ functionality
Total on-exchange value traded through RFQ has increased to €501.37 million, vs €125.53 million of March. Since its inception (Dec 2016), the functionality has helped our customers to trade over €1 billion in ETFs

Six new BNP Paribas ETCs from industrial metals sector launched on Xetra
May 18, 2017--ETCs provide access to Rogers International Commodity Enhanced Indices (RICI) and are tradable in US Dollar
Six new exchange traded commodities (ETCs) issued by BNP Paribas Arbitrage Issuance B.V. have been tradable on Xetra since Thursday.
The new ETCs expand BNP Paribas' product range by giving investors access to the performance of futures contracts from the industrial metals sector in the trading currency US dollars.

ESMA finds improvements in regulators' supervisory practices concerning MiFID rules on fair, clear and not misleading information
May 18, 2017--The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published a Follow-up Report on the actions undertaken by ten National Competent Authorities (NCAs) in addressing deficiencies identified in the 2014 Peer Review on MiFID Conduct of Business rules relating to fair, clear and not misleading information (2014 Review).
ESMA welcomes the efforts made by most of the ten NCAs.
