European Commission-Winter 2017 Economic Forecast: Navigating through choppy waters

February 13, 2017--All EU Member States' economies set to grow in 2016, 2017 and 2018
Having proven resilient to global challenges last year, the European economic recovery is expected to continue this year and next: for the first time in almost a decade, the economies of all EU Member States are expected to grow throughout the entire forecasting period (2016, 2017 and 2018).

However, the outlook is surrounded by higher-than-usual uncertainty.

Real GDP in the euro area has grown for 15 consecutive quarters, employment is growing at a robust pace and unemployment continues to fall, although it remains above pre-crisis levels. Private consumption is still the engine of the recovery. Investment growth continues but remains subdued.

IMF-Australia: Selected Issues

February 9, 2017--Australia's labor markets were not severely impacted by the global financial crisis, and are adjusting smoothly to the sizeable commodity prices bust and mining investment downturn. However, some labor market indicators suggest persistent weaknesses.

For instance, long-term unemployment rates have risen, and prevail above long-term averages. Underemployment rates are also elevated. Much of the employment growth since the end of the mining investment boom has been driven by part-time employment, and wage growth remains weak.

ESMA assesses DLT's potential and interactions with EU rules

February 7, 2017--The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued today a report on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).

The report sets out ESMA's view on DLT, its possible applications, benefits, risks and how it maps to existing EU regulation. ESMA's position is that regulatory action is premature at this stage, considering that the technology is still at an early stage.

ESMA believes that DLT could bring a number of benefits to financial markets, including more efficient post-trade services, enhanced reporting capabilities and reduced costs. ESMA expects the early applications of DLT to focus on optimising processes using the current market structure.
