South Africa: Economy Contracts By 3.2 Percent in the First Quarter

June 4, 2019--Statistician General Risenga Maluleke says the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contracted by 3.2% in the first quarter of 2019.

Speaking at the release of the GDP results for the first quarter of 2019, Maluleke on Tuesday said this was largely due to the mining and quarrying and manufacturing industries being negative contributors to growth quarter-on-quarter

The manufacturing industry decreased by 8.8% and contributed -1.1 percentage points to the GDP. view more

African Continental Free Trade Agreement Comes Into Effect

May 30, 2019--The African continental free trade agreement legally came into effect at midnight, but the countries that have signed up have until July to work out the details of how it will work.
It is only from then that we'll start to see what difference it could make.

The AU's commissioner for trade and industry Albert Muchanga celebrated the news on Twitter.

So far, only 24 African countries out of 54 have ratified the trade agreement with, among others, Africa's largest economy Nigeria yet to sign.
